We might be tempted to forget about God in good times. But during hard times, such as illness or family crisis, our fears and insecurities can bring us back to God and God’s unconditional love. God gave his only Son so that we might have eternal life. Therefore, we can then turn to God for help in our hour of need.
Today’s gospel recalls the appearance of Jesus to two disciples on the road to Emmaus. They were confused, perhaps frightened, and Jesus showed them the way. In the breaking of the bread, he revealed himself to them. In our own life’s journey, we are only able to carry our crosses because Jesus walks with us. He is guiding and protecting. We need to learn to look with our hearts to recognize his presence.
What can we do to express gratitude for the great gift of Easter? By feeding our spirit, by receiving Jesus in communion, we ensure that we are never separated from the joy experienced by the two disciples, nor from the light that Jesus shines in our lives to show the way. Jesus will carry us when we fall. ]
