A long, tight bundle of brightly colored paper, wrapping two narrow lengths of flexible wood, cost one shiny quarter 50 years ago. Carefully unroll it, place the slotted ends of the sticks into string loops glued into place on the outer seam of the flattened diamond-shaped paper, then tie string where the sticks crossed and…voilà! You had a kite! Add some long strips of sheet from the rag bin for a tail, then off to the park!
The breeze caught the kites as we ran. Our spirits soared along with our paper flyers. Anything seemed possible. “We were all made to drink of one Spirit.” Somewhere along our lives’ path, fear joined us, dreams dimmed. Like those women and men gathered together so long ago, we also worry about what will become of us. Like them, we need to hear a sound “like a strong driving wind” and see, as they did, “tongues, as of fire.” The Spirit touched them, breaking the bonds of their fear. It touches us too! As St. Paul says, “the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” Hear him say, “Peace be with you.”
