Despite our almost constant media exposure to all things carnal, those of us pondering today’s first reading may still be somewhat puritanical when it comes to frank discussions of sex and sexuality. We tend to create separate compartments for what we consider “sacred” and “profane.” Sarah, Abraham’s wife, will have none of this false division. Today, we see her contemplate her womanly periods and speak of her sexual pleasure and childbearing in response to the generous promise of the Lord’s messengers that, despite her age, she will have a baby. She is doubtful and elated, laughing and lying, incredulous and faithful enough to allow God into all the dimensions of her life.
