Growing closer to Jesus of Sunday July 16, 2023

A A

Today’s readings and gospel touch our senses. We can see the rain and snow falling, enriching the land. Women who have brought children into the world know the pains of childbirth, and if we have witnessed a baby being born, we have seen how much mothers suffer and how long it takes for them to recover. But the joys of holding a newborn baby always outweigh the pain and suffering.

We are familiar with the parable of the sower and the seed, told to the seaside crowd by Jesus in today’s gospel. I can see the farmer spending hours in the hot sun scattering the seed, hoping it takes root and grows. If the farmer spends this much time and energy on his crop, how much more does Jesus want us to see, hear, and understand the word, and turn to him? He wants our faith to take root and not wither. He wants us to grow deeper in our faith and spend more time in prayer.

May we grow closer to Jesus during today’s eucharistic celebration, and open our eyes, ears, and heart to receive his love for us.
