The Spirit gives voice of Sunday July 23, 2023

A A

Sometimes a heartfelt “ARRGGHH!” just doesn’t express the depth of our problems as human beings. Life experiences we encounter as individuals, communities, and world citizens can be so unfathomably abhorrent, they render us speechless instead.

Those who long for the reign of God, where goodness will be ever-present, though, look to the steadfast love of this covenantal and saving God for courage, stamina, and transformation. The God who brought Israel out of slavery, the God who formed them into a people who would be a light to the nations, is the same God revealed in Jesus and in his teachings.
The parables of the kingdom teach us to be as surprised and heartened at the appearance of God’s reign as we would be if we planted a small seed destined to be a bush that inexplicably grew into a cosmic tree where all nations lived in peace.

May we be grateful that the Spirit gives voice to our unspeakable cries of supplication, especially when things are the most difficult!
