“Jesus said in reply, ‘You do not know what you are asking’” (Matthew 20:22). of Tuesday July 25, 2023
A quick glance at today’s gospel might lead us to think that the mother of James and John was asking Jesus her question out of selfishness and pride. Apparently, those motives were in play. But I also think that her question was rooted in love—the love of a mother. She was asking for a place of honor for her sons, not herself.
She, James, and John had spent time with Jesus, learned about his message, experienced firsthand his divine love. Who wouldn’t want that to continue? Yes, she likely asked her question out of emotion, and maybe without sufficient discernment and reflection. Maybe she failed to be considerate of others. And certainly she lacked a clear understanding of Jesus’ teaching and of eternal life. How often do we petition the Lord under similar circumstances?
