In today’s gospel, we see grace operating in Peter’s heart as he realizes Jesus is the Son of God. When we reflect on our own lives, we can certainly pinpoint similar moments; moments where God makes clear to us deep truths that we were once unable to grasp. “For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.” Our faith is a gift; it is infused into our souls by Christ himself.
We all have loved ones who either don’t believe or don’t practice their faith. It is tempting to become frustrated and turn away from them. But note how Jesus never cuts off the disciples as they work through their difficulties. He lovingly guides and questions them. His accompaniment opens their hearts. This is what Jesus did with Peter, allowing Peter to receive the gift of faith, proclaim Jesus as Lord, and become the foundation upon which the Church will be built.
Never cease to pray for your loved ones so that, one day, Christ’s true identity will be revealed to them and the faith made clear.
