If we look at our life, we will most likely be able to relate to the workers in today’s gospel. Some days, we are the early workers: putting in the effort to live good and holy lives, and having borne “the day’s burden and the heat.” We may very well have seen other people receive the same rewards without putting forth a similar amount of work. We start comparing and get stuck in an “it’s not fair” mindset. Other days, we might relate more to the workers who started late: we realize the Lord blessed us when we least deserved it, and we are made aware of God’s merciful nature. We are reminded that God’s ways are not our ways, and God’s thoughts are above our thoughts.
The Father’s heart is full of compassion: God sees us waiting, sees us struggling to find our place. God knows we’re worried and is aware of the burdens we are carrying. The Lord has called us to work in his vineyard. What a privilege it is to have been chosen! Isn’t being chosen by the Lord a reward in itself? Take a moment to thank the Father for choosing you today.
