“They finished the building according to the command of the God of Israel…” (Ezra 6:14). of Tuesday September 26, 2023
The Israelites are thrilled with the completion of their new temple—and rightfully so. This place of worship is a magnificent dream come true. But the story evokes this question in me: In what kind of buildings or places have I worshiped? I’ve celebrated Mass in my parish church, a school gym, St. Peter’s Basilica, my parents’ living room, a huge tent in India, a tiny church in rural northern Virginia, a hospital room. I remember these places not because the surroundings were so impressive, but because of the sacred rite that was performed. Yes, church buildings are important, but more important than any physical structure are the people who come together to worship and who are transformed into the people of God by the rites they celebrate.
