Jesus is denouncing the scribes for showing off their wealth to others. He points to the widow who gives, not from her surplus, but from her meager resources. 

I am reminded of friends who were back against the wall while raising a family of nine. Patrick, the father, was without work. The family had but $37 the day they heard a missionary speak of his work and the needs he faced. Silvia tells it this way: “Pat and I don’t always agree on the small things, but on the big things, we are of one mind. We looked at one another and didn’t hesitate; we gave him all we had, the $37. The very next day, the job we’d prayed for so long for became a reality. It really did!”
