Today’s gospel recounts the story of Jesus calling his first disciples. After spending a day with Jesus, Andrew immediately tells his brother Simon about the Messiah. Have you shared about your encounter with Christ with a friend or family member lately? Too often we keep these experiences to ourselves, worried what other people may think of us, or afraid we won’t say the right words. Andrew’s example is simple: he shares with a loved one the joyful news of finding the Messiah.
Andrew brings Simon to Jesus. He gives him the opportunity to meet the Lord and experience the love of God. There are many ways we can bring others to Christ.
These two simple, yet life-changing, acts undertaken by Andrew had a meaningful impact not only on Simon’s life, but also on the entire Church. Through that invitation, Simon (Peter) was able to respond to his call to be a great leader among the early Christians, and ultimately become our first pope. Never underestimate what marvels God can work through our openness to share God with others!
