Perfect relationship of Sunday May 26, 2024

A A

Today we celebrate Trinity Sunday. In the readings, we catch glimpses of some attributes of the Trinity. These glimpses can aid in our understanding of one of the mysteries of our faith and can inform our daily living.

While the readings have a common theme – God’s eternal and steadfast love – the focus of the Gospel is discipleship. Here Jesus calls us to take up our identity as children of God and to share in the life of the Trinity. We may feel unworthy and hesitate to accept this divine invitation. However, we have nothing to fear. God is love and our only task is to love God in return.

This is easier said than done because love demands things of us. Love requires a high level of self-giving and engagement with others. We know this from our own experiences and from the example of Jesus. But, with the help of the Spirit, we are able to imitate, though imperfectly, Trinitarian love in our relationships with others and with creation.

I like to think of the Trinity as a perfect relationship. One that is informed by mutual respect and consideration. One where love flows freely and where each person delights in the others.
