I write to deadlines and to available space. I allot the time and space required for the project and move on. For many, especially those who procrastinate, this is difficult to do. Many people yearn to achieve things, but they don’t burn.
In today’s Gospel, the rich, young man yearns for salvation, but he isn’t burning. He is willing to do the minimum to gain eternal life, but he is very hesitant to step outside his comfort zone and go the extra mile.
He is much like many of us. Do we burn with a passion for eternal life? Are we willing to do more than the minimum, which may be in our comfort zone, to gain eternal life? We may have good intentions, but are good intentions going to help us meet the deadline?
We fool ourselves if we think we can gain eternal life by our own merit. We need wisdom which comes from God. We need the Word of God to judge the “intentions of the heart.” “For humans, [salvation] is impossible, but not for God.”
Today, let us pray for the wisdom of God to fill our hearts so that we may give ourselves over to God. Then we can step out of our comfort zone and burn with a desire to serve God.
