In my late teens, I read William Thomas Walsh’s Our Lady of Fatima. It prompted me to quit a job that was lacking some ethics. Afterward, I was in a spiritual fog. I went for one of those long walks in attempt to reconnect with the Lord. On that walk, I saw at an intersection a yellow Volkswagen with these words boldly painted on it: “Pray the Rosary, Fatima 1917.”
In today’s gospel, we hear the familiar story of how Jesus called his first disciples to be fishers of people. If we place today’s gospel into the present day, we can imagine Jesus walking through an office complex and asking us to leave our desks. Do we drop everything and go?
The response from the apostles was immediate. Jesus chose humble people whose hearts, he knew, were receptive to the call. Through the sacraments, prayer, and Scripture, we seek the Lord. God can also speak via a billboard, a bumper sticker, or even a yellow Volkswagen! This is the all-powerful voice of Love that spoke creation into existence.
