“Empty” is how we feel when we are hurt or lonely, or when some circumstance takes away those people or things important to us. And yet, empty is precisely how Jesus came to earth, void of all divine trappings that are rightly his as Son of God, just so he could love us more fully.
And empty is how Jesus asks us to be in relation to others and God—empty of selfishness, self-importance and the incessant need to be right. Empty of the need to take care only of ourselves, so we can better serve others. For to be emptied is to be filled by God. Jesus, I come to you empty, ready to be filled by your love and grace.
